translator's note:
Elisia Bordiano transformed Southern Italy, New Zealand, and the Caspian Sea into sprawling emerald caverns and claustrophobic spacecrafts for this vicious experiment in science fiction, seldom seen for nearly half a century. Filmed in the 1950's and repressed for decades by the notorious Italian censor board for its graphic violence and Marxist undertones, the Criterion Collection is proud to present Bordiano's original 540-minute cut of the film in a beautiful 4k digital restoration.
During time of production, Bordiano was recovering from a severe illness that claimed the lives of her partner and child, while at once battling with the Italian government who threatened to blacklist her. Under such conditions, Bordiano managed to create a film that is not only a gorgeous and horrifying science fiction journey, but also a masterful satire of the Italian government.
An early use of animatronics and claymation give the mutation sequences a savage quality, shot with unflinching brutalism by Robby Müller and amplified by springboard's original score, music that soothes and unsettles at equal measure.
Oozing with brutish charisma, filmmaker Jill Godmillow embodies the anarchist researcher Dr. Kedra Spencer, who feels that the bourgeois IPF enclave has abandoned her and her colleagues. Bordiano juxtaposes the intense yet restrained performances against stunning setpieces of speculative science fiction, shot with bare-bones, handheld 16 mm camera work, which gives immediacy to this savage story of rebellion. Featuring a supporting cast drawn from Bordiano's troupe of theater actors that also includes Gillian Anderson, Gary Oldman, and playwright Andre Gregory, Ice Planet III demonstrates the uncompromising vision of its director, a trailblazer of the New Italian Cinema.
